6.1 What mailing lists are there? / How do I subscribe?

Q.
Could you tell me about official Mew-ML?
A.
As of Mar 27, 1998, there are four MLs about Mew, using fml as the ML server.
mew-dist ML (In Japanese, English)
Objective:
This is the ML for general questions and discussions on Mew. You'll also become a member of the mew-release ML (see below) automatically if you subscribe to this ML.
Control address:
mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
Objective:
mew-release ML (In English)
Objective:
For announcments of new versions of Mew. This is a read-only ML, unless you're a developer of Mew. If you're a member of mew-dist ML, you don't have to subscribe to this ML. You'll receive them anyway.
Control address:
mew-release-ctl@Mew.org
mew-int ML (In English)
Objective:
For discussions about I18N (InternationalizatioN) of Mew.
Control address:
mew-int-ctl@Mew.org
mew-win32 ML (In Japanese, English)
Objective:
For discussions concerning Mew on Win32 (Windows95/98/NT).
Control address:
mew-win32-ctl@Mew.org

To become a subscriber of any of the MLs above, you must take two steps; request and confirm. This might seem awkward, but it's neccessary to prevent from malicious people trying to register someone else's address.

6.1.1 Request for subscription

After you decided which ML you want to be a member, send a mail to the corresponding "control address" with a command line in the body "subscribe ".

E.g.,

To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
Subject: Don't-care
----
subscribe SAITO Tetsuya

6.1.2 Confirm your subscription request

After you send a request mail, you'll receive a mail from the ML-server program asking you to make a confirmation on the request. The mail looks like this;

Subject: Subscribe confirmation request (Mew-dist ML)

>>> subscribe SAITO Tetsuya
confirm XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Your Name

Please reply this mail to confirm your subscirbe request
and send this to mew-dist-ctl@mew.org
So, you can be added to MAILING LIST .

---mew-dist@mew.org, Be Seeing You!
...

Here, the "XXXXXX..." is actually an encrypted password you need to confirm. Simply reply to this mail with the command "confirm XXX...";

To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
Subject: Re: Subscribe confirmation...
----
confirm XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Your Name

After you send the confirmation, you'll receive a mail with a subject "Welcome to our (Mew-dist ML) You are added automatically". You're finished!

6.2 How can I stop the subscription temporarily?

Q.
I'll be out of town for a while, and I don't want my mailbox to be overflowed. What can I do?
A.
You may stop the mail to be delivered without unsubscribing. Recall the "control address" of the corresponding ML. Send a mail to the address with a command "off";
To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
----
off

6.3 How can I enable the subscription I stopped?

Q.
I had a wonderful vacation. Now I want to receive mails again. How do I do it?
A.
It's just the opposite. Send to the control address an "on" command;
To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
----
on

6.4 How do I unsubscribe?

Q.
I'd like to withdraw from the ML. What should I do?
A.
To unsubscribe, you must take the two steps (request and confirm) similar to subscribing. Send a "bye" command to the control address, and then you'll receive a mail to confirm it. Reply to it, and you're done.

6.4.1 Request for un-subscription

Send a "bye" command to the control address;

To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
----
bye

6.4.2 Confirm your un-subscription request

You'll receive a mail like this;

Subject: Unsubscribe confirmation request

unsubscribe-confirm XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Your Name

Please reply this mail to confirm your unsubscribe request
and send this to mew-dist-ctl@mew.org
....

Reply to this mail with an "unsubscribe-confirm" command;

To: mew-dist-ctl@Mew.org
----
unsubscribe-confirm XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Your Name

You'll receive a mail like this;

Subject: fml Command Status report (Mew-dist ML)

>>> unsubscribe-confirm XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Your Name
set UNSUBSCRIBE-CONFIRM => BYE
changed a delivery list.
BYE [your@address]  accepted.
---mew-dist@mew.org, Be Seeing You!

Your request is confirmed.

6.5 How can I get these damn ML control commands work?

Q.
For some reasons, I can get the "on" ("off", "bye") command work! Help!
A.
The most common reason is that your mail address (From: line you used for these commands was different from the mail address you used for subscription. Try to send from the same machine/configuration you used to subscribe.

The next common reason is you're sending to the wrong control address. Check the To: line.

If you still can't get them work, ask the ML operator.
